The Department of Art History at Tyler School of Art of Temple University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate professor level in the History of Art with a specialization in Islamic Art, Architecture, and Material Culture. The area and period of expertise is open, though interest in cross-cultural encounters is an asset, and the successful candidate will have the ability to teach courses across a historical span of art and architecture. Candidates with research agendas that include Iberia, North Africa, or the Levant are especially encouraged to apply. We seek applicants who demonstrate an understanding of global, transregional, and transcultural issues pertaining to the specific field, and who are innovative in adapting course content to developments in the discipline. Knowledge of issues relating to cultural heritage preservation is also desirable. Candidates will have a PhD before teaching assignments commence (August 2018) and demonstrated experience teaching in a college or university, displaying familiarity with best teaching practices, instructional design, and teaching that incorporates emerging technologies. Candidates should also have experience with department/college-wide service and demonstrate professional accomplishments in the discipline. The position involves teaching both at the undergraduate level (including liberal arts Art History majors, studio art students, and non-majors), and teaching and advising at the M.A. and Ph.D. level. Tyler’s Department of Art History has a faculty of 10 full-time faculty members who specialize in areas ranging from Bronze Age to Global Contemporary. The department is located on Temple University’s main Philadelphia campus and is housed in a state-of-the-art facility. Temple offers a world-renowned faculty and the resources of a major university in a culturally rich city and region.

The coexistence of Christianity and Islam in the Medieval Mediterranean led to a
transfer of knowledge in architecture and material culture which went well beyond
religious and geographical boundaries. The use of Islamic objects in Christian
contexts, the conversion of churches into mosques and the mobility of craftsmen are
manifestations of this process. Although studies beginning with Avinoam Shalem’s
Islam Christianized (1996), have dealt extensively with Islamic influence in the West
and European influence in the Islamic Mediterranean, sacred objects, and material
culture more generally, have been relatively neglected. From crosses found in
Mosques, to European-Christian coins with pseudo/-shahada inscriptions, medieval
material culture is rife with visual evidence of the two faiths co-existing in both
individual objects and monuments.
This panel invites papers from scholars working on intercultural exchange in art,
architecture and material culture. We particularly welcome contributions that focus
on sacred objects that have been diverted or ‘converted’ to a new purpose, whether
inside or outside an explicitly religious context.
Papers should present original research, which expands the boundaries of
knowledge and which the scholars would like to be considered for publication.
Abstract should be no more than 250 words long.

A one-day workshop on medieval ascension narratives, from al-Sarai’s Nahj al-Faradis to the Liber Scale Machometi and Dante’s Commedia, will be held at the David Collection, Kronprinsessegade 30, Copenhagen, on Monday 27 March 2017. It will be followed by a public lecture on Tuesday 28 March 2017 by Prof. Christiane Gruber (University of Michigan), who has written widely on Islamic book arts, ascension images and narratives, and depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. This workshop—conducted by Prof. Gruber and an interdisciplinary team of art and literary historians from the Centre for Medieval Literature and the David Collection—will allow for a sustained analysis of the changing values conferred upon ascension texts and images in cross-cultural contexts. We will focus on their circulation in Islamic lands and Europe, since the notion of rising into the heavens was imagined in prose, verse, manuscript paintings, and wall frescoes from Ilkhanid Persia to Medieval Castile and Renaissance Italy. Ascension narratives served as a powerful tool for expressing and exploring theological, philosophical, spiritual, and soteriological concerns in literature and art, within both Christian and Muslim traditions. For these reasons, this workshop seeks to open new avenues and approaches, asking, in particular, how can we conceptualize narratives that travel and are adapted, reformed, and reimagined across various temporal and geographical domains. Additionally, how can we explore questions of world (or trans-imperial) literature through medieval ascension narratives? Is this possible through a sustained engagement with both text and image, positioning the artistic with the literary and vice versa?

Scholars from Denmark and abroad will have the unprecedented opportunity to examine some of the extraordinary manuscripts and precious objects preserved in the David Collection during a private visit led by the museum’s curators and Prof. Gruber.

The workshop is sponsored by the Centre for Medieval Literature in cooperation with the David Collection. Participation is free, and places available are limited to 15 in number. Participants will have to bear costs for travel and accommodation themselves.

Postgraduate students and early career scholars willing to become more familiar with questions of cross-cultural engagement, text and image issues, and medieval narratives are particularly encouraged to apply regardless of their disciplinary expertise. The Universidad Internacional de Andalucía and the Escuela de la Alhambra present “Al-Murābiṭūn: Noveno centenario del esplendor de un Imperio,” a colloquium/ course in honor of the memory of Prof. Henri Terrasse, to he held 19-22 October 2017 at the Palace of Carlos V in the Alhambra (Granada).

2016 is the 900th anniversary of the conquest of the Balearic islands by the Almoravids (1116), an event which corresponded to the greatest territorial expansion of their empire and started the moment of its maximum splendor. With the occupation of the Islands, the empire obtained a vast territory extending from Mauritania to Zaragoza, as since the end of the 11th century they had been gaining power over the taifas of Al-Andalus, becoming the most important empire of Western Islam during the first half of the 12th century. They were the first to unite the two sides of the Strait of Gibraltar under the same political and religious power. This fact enabled a lively social, commercial and cultural exchange between Al-Andalus and North Africa, centered around the great capitals of the Empire, especially the North African Marrakech, and the peninsular Granada.

Moreover, this year marks 45 years since the death of Professor Henri Terrasse, a great scholar of the art of Morocco and Al-Andalus. Among his works are several publications dedicated to the art and arquitecture of Al-Andalus, necessary starting points for anyone interested in pursuing research in these fields.
During this international seminar, several specialists of the Almoravides will commemorate the 900th centernary of the apogee of the greater Western Islamic empire, with a special attention to the legacy of Henri Terrasse.

Workshop for MA and PhD students on Medieval Magic for MA & PhD students (7 July 2016)

The workshop will take place on July 7 at the Warburg Institute in London, and will focus on the topic of “Magical Traditions and Medieval Religions of the Book”. The keynote paper will be given by Prof. Jean-Patrice Boudet (Orléans) and the workshop will include ‎sessions on PhD and Early Career Advice and a Laboratory with period and regional focus groups led by speakers, chairs and ESSWE board members.

There is a symbiotic relationship between design, art and visual culture, and the exact sciences, which is attested in early scientific objects from al-Andalus and in medieval Arabic texts. In this talk I explore the objects, spaces, and figures that illuminate this relationship, focusing on ‘Abbas Ibn Firnas (d. ca. 887), the celebrated polymath of the Cordoban Umayyad court, and on al-Andalus and its contemporaries between the 9th-11th centuries.

Glaire D. Anderson is a historian of Islamic art of the caliphal period, with a focus on the art and court culture of Umayyad Cordoba. She is the author of The Villa in Early Islamic Iberia (Ashgate, 2013), co-editor with Mariam Rosser-Owen of Revisiting al-Andalus (Brill, 2007), and recent articles on the Islamic west in architectural history, women and the arts of Cordoba, and material culture and caliphal sovereignty.
