Gotik global – kolonial – postkolonial: Gotisierende Sakralarchitektur auf der Iberischen Halbinsel und in Lateinamerika vom 19. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert

Tagung der Technischen Universität Dresden, Institut für Kunst- und Musikwissenschaft der Philosophischen Fakultät in Zusammenarbeit mit der Carl Justi-Vereinigung e.V.

Immer wieder werden im iberischen und iberoamerikanischen Raum – wie weltweit –  auch heute noch gotisierende Kirchen errichtet. Einige sind typisch für die Neugotik, andere, wie die Almudena-Kathedrale in Madrid oder diejenige von Vitoria-Gasteiz, scheinen als verspätete Bauten des 20. Jahrhundert aus europäischer Sicht aus der Zeit gefallen zu sein. Doch wird gerade in Lateinamerika bis heute an zahlreichen solcher Projekte weitergebaut.
So scheint es zunächst sinnvoll zu überprüfen, ob die stillschweigende Annahme, „die Gotik“ sei eine abgeschlossene Stilepoche, aus globaler Perspektive überhaupt stimmt. Wie ging die zweifellos zunächst kolonial begründete Gotik-Ausbreitung in den überseeischen Gebieten der ehemals spanischen und portugiesischen Weltreiche in eine eigene postkoloniale Adaption über, welche Gründe gab es hierfür und welche stilistischen Ausprägungen wurden und werden gefunden? Wie begann die Entwicklung in den „Mutterländern“? Ist sie dort und in den ehemaligen Kolonien ähnlich oder unterschiedlich verlaufen, gibt es fortdauernde Verbindungen? Lassen sich Parallelen in anderen Weltregionen beobachten? Sind die Phänomene alleine auf die Gotik beschränkt oder gibt es Parallelen für andere Stile?
Im Workshop der Carl Justi-Vereinigung e.V. soll diese Problematik stichprobenartig untersucht werden. Denn ein systematischer Gesamtüberblick ist zur Zeit kaum möglich, sind doch nicht einmal die potenziell wichtigsten Bauten bekannt.

CFP: “A Global Trecento: Objects, Artist, and Ideas Across Europe, the Mediterranean, and Beyond,” IMC Leeds, 2019 (Deadline 15 September 2018)

Looking at the Trecento through the lens of current global paradigms and concerns inmarco polo historical and art historical studies might seem hazardous, or even paradoxical and provocative at best. Very few other labels have the power to evoke both the glories, achievements and limitations of traditional ‘Western’, and namely Eurocentric, art history. As a matter of fact, using the Italian word Trecento to mean the ‘Fourteenth Century’ in the visual arts, music and potentially any area of human endeavour adumbrates a clear hierarchy–with Italy at its top. It is meaningful, and perhaps no coincidence, that the term Trecento came into use in English in the same years that mark the tumultuous expansion of the new discipline of art history in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and its usage has grown exponentially ever since. While much has been done in recent decades to broaden our understanding of the period both geographically and philosophically, the Trecento remains primarily the century of Giotto and of the great Tuscan painters and sculptors. At this time of building national ‘walls’, it seems particularly appropriate to think that the seminal and transformative character of the Trecento owes much to artistic and cultural exchanges, movement of artists and patrons, circulation of models and ideas across Italy, Europe, the Mediterranean and beyond. Our aim is to bring into conversation recent research on these issues.

The Department of Art at Wake Forest University invites applications for a Teacher-Scholar Postdoctoral Fellow specializing in global approaches to art history, to begin July 1, 2018.  This position has an initial one-year appointment with a possible renewal for an additional year.  Teacher-Scholar Postdoctoral Fellows teach two courses per semester, including an introductory survey, focused surveys, upper-level courses in the candidate’s area(s) of specialization, and first year seminars. We seek candidates who specialize in a tradition other than European, Islamic, or South Asian art and architecture.  Examples include but are not limited to: African, East Asian, Native American/First Nations, or Pre-Columbian/Latin American art.

The Department of History at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of late antique or medieval history. Our search encompasses all fields and areas of medieval European, Mediterranean, and/or Near Eastern history, ca. 200–1400 CE. Preferred qualifications: ability to teach a range of undergraduate lectures and seminars in late antique and/or medieval history; research and teaching interests that relate and can contribute to one or more of our graduate program thematic clusters (Global connections, empire, capitalism; Health, science, environment; Race, citizenship, migration; Religion, gender, cultural identity; States, nations, political cultures).  We also welcome interdisciplinary candidates whose historical work addresses social, cultural, economic, and/or political processes; who engage with material and/or visual cultures; and/or who can participate in Stony Brook’s Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations.

This thematic issue of the journal Convivium is dedicated to the Italian South from the 5th to the 15th century. It seeks papers that engage with the specific transcultural dynamics of a geographical and historical area containing highly diverse political, social, and religious entities, as well as with the multi-layered connectivities that can be traced in the Italian South, across the Mediterranean, and beyond.

We invite contributions from Art History, Archaeology, History, Anthropology, Paleography, and related disciplines that deal with the cultural diversity of Late Antique and medieval Southern Italy with special attention to sites, monuments, landscapes, images, and objects, as well as to the visual and aesthetic spheres in general. We are primarily interested in exploring horizontal and vertical dynamics, in terms of time (synchronicity/diachronicity) and space (global/Mediterranean/local scales). Papers with a theoretical and historiographical approach are particularly welcome.

Main topics to be addressed might include:

-Artistic contacts and interactions in the Italian South, in a transregional and global perspective
-Centripetal and centrifugal paths of exchange, transmission, and appropriation
-Cross-cultural migration of objects, images, and techniques among spaces, contexts, and media: practices of reuse, appropriation, and interpretation
-Sites, places, and spaces of cultural interactions, such as cities and courts
-Religious interactions in sacred space and rituals
-Local persistence and reinterpretation of the (antique) past in different political and/or cultural scenarios
-The fascination of the (medieval) Italian South, from the 18th century to the present day
-The notion of “Southern Italian”, as it relates to the study of medieval art, and its historiographical consequences

Convivium V/1 will be published in March 2018.
