Conference: The Right Moment. A Symposium on Kairotic Energies, Brussels, 18-19 October 2018

church-of-the-holy-nativity-631The Greek term kairós expresses an idea of ‘grasping the right moment’, which travelled through art, literature, and philosophy. And even today, it is central to debates over, for example, time management. Combining perspectives from classical reception studies and iconology, this ongoing project at KU Leuven (2017-2021) is about the reception of kairós in the visual medium from antiquity to the Renaissance. How was the notion of kairós visualized in images throughout time, from antiquity to the early modern era? And more specifically, how did text and image work together to transform the notion of kairós in various contexts?

The attending speakers from Belgium, Germany, France, Israel, Croatia, The Netherlands, Romania, The United Kingdom, The United States, and Switzerland have not only been selected on the basis of their interdisciplinary skills in the field; but equally because of their distinctive contribution to the method of iconology and visual anthropology.

Many among them are key influencers on, among other things, the importance of the Humanities in terms of peace process work, ecology, and the relationship between Eastern and Western civilizations.

À partir du XVe siècle, des représentations de la Vierge à l’Enfant attribuées à l’évangéliste Luc vont commencer à circuler dans le nord-ouest de l’Europe, sous la forme de copies plus ou moins fidèles venues d’Italie.

Ces images, procédant de modèles byzantins, seront considérées comme des témoignages véridiques, ayant valeur de documents quant à l’aspect physique du Christ et de sa Mère. Elles susciteront dès les années 1490 de nombreux miracles et donneront lieu à des pèlerinages. L’engouement du public pour ces représentations estimées authentiques amènera à son tour, dans les anciens Pays-Bas, une importante production de copies.

Avant le XVIIe siècle, le modèle byzantin fut le plus souvent adapté aux traditions artistiques locales : l’icône fut sans autre forme de procès convertie en un panneau de Primitif flamand.

À partir du XVIIe siècle, les copistes s’efforceront en revanche d’imiter le plus fidèlement possible leurs modèles et créeront ainsi un étonnant style néo-byzantin. En réalité, il est clair que l’art de Byzance plaisait peu aux peintres des XVe, XVIe et XVIIe siècles et que la valorisation des icônes pour des raisons d’ordre religieux a donné naissance à un véritable conflit entre esthétique et dévotion, goût et authenticité.

C’est à ce conflit et à la difficile gestion de la différence artistique durant trois siècles d’art flamand que sera consacrée la présente conférence.

wblogoThe German Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, which unites art and cultural historical Institutes in France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy, invites applications for several full-time research posts (in principle post-doctoral) based at the Warburg Institute in London for five years from February 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The objective of this project is to explore the migration of images, objects, ideas and texts in a broad historical and geographical context. The aim shall be a contribution to the history of images which is based on Aby Warburg’s approach and method, rethinking them in the light of new interdisciplinary, international scholarship. The project will reconstruct and develop a rich scholarly approach which addresses the distinctiveness of images while also studying the language in which ideas about transfers between cultures (including ideas about images) are expressed.

Research staff in London will contribute particularly to the overall project of studying the ways in which images and ideas are transferred between cultures and to the project of investigating the role of rhetoric in understanding images, ideas and intercultural relations. Research staff will conduct their own research and contribute to the larger projects. We are particularly interested in applicants with high level research skills in art history, trade between Europe and the Orient, prints and other portable images, rhetoric, anthropology and comparative religion. Applicants will be expected to have a good knowledge of the languages relevant to their field of study and a good speaking and reading knowledge of German and English.

Post-holders will be employed by the Deutsches Forum für Kunstgeschichte in Paris and paid on German government research scales according to their skills and experience. For qualified applicants residing in Germany this may include international German subsidy. Place of work is
London.

Applications should include:
A letter of application indicating candidates’ interests in and suitability for the projects of the
research group; a curriculum vitae and publications list; the names of three referees;  a writing sample of around 5,000 words of published or unpublished research.

Completed applications must be submitted by Tuesday 26 November.

Interviews may be held in London on Saturday 14 or Sunday 15 December, 2013.
