CFP: The Multimedia Craft of Wonder: Forming and Performing Marvels in Medieval and Early Modern Worlds, 1200-1600 (University of Cambridge, deadline 1 August 2021)

This conference, funded by the interdisciplinary Cambridge centre CRASSH and the Faculty of English, will explore the relationship between wonder, translation, and multimodality in medieval and early modern worlds.

The Paris Psalter is one of the most famous creations of the Macedonian “Renaissance”. This colloquium is the first research enterprise devoted exclusively to this exceptional manuscript. Its aim is to bring together in an interdisciplinary group of scholars specializing in codicology and philology, biblical exegesis and theology, and the history of art and aesthetics with the goal of putting the manuscript in context, studying its genesis and sources and its internal organization as well as its influence on Byzantine art.

This study day is hosted by the British Archaeological Association, of which Cathy was a longstanding member. It will concentrate of various aspects of Marian devotion a subject close to Cathy’s heart and the focus of her book, Ora Pro Nobis: The Virgin as Intercessor in Medieval Art and Devotion (2008), from which this day takes its title.

This workshop, organised by Dr Anthi Andronikou, aims to relocate regional arts and cultures within a broader Mediterranean context from an interdisciplinary point of view. Scholars in the fields of Byzantine, Islamic, Jewish and Western Medieval studies will probe interconnections across different ethnic, political, artistic and confessional spheres through historical and art historical perspectives.
