Conference: Heritage Revisited. Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe, Kunsthistorisches Institut, University of Vienna, September 20–21, 2018

0For centuries, objects from Islamic lands were unquestioned parts of the material and visual culture of pre-modern Latinate Europe. A textile from Fatimid Egypt, for instance, the so-called “Veil of Sainte Anne”, was kept in the cathedral treasury of Apt and venerated as a Christian relic.

The workshop “Heritage Revisited. Rediscovering Objects from Islamic Lands in Enlightenment Europe” is dedicated to the long eighteenth century, a period in which, so we believe, an important shift in the perception of such objects took place. Islamic provenances were rediscovered, objects were studied, drawn and discussed. Finally, they were subjected to the classificatory scheme of European modernity, which leaves little space for conceptions of a historically entangled heritage.

Object case-studies shed light on the networks of scholars and institutions involved in the rediscoveries and will be framed in the discussions within broader discourses on (European) cultural heritage. Ultimately, we wish to offer new perspectives on the history of scholarship, notably Islamic art history, but also on perceptions of cultural belonging, of “Europeanness” and “Otherness”, which deeply resonate with current societal concerns.

CONFERENCE THEME | ART AND ITS DIRECTIONS

This year’s conference theme Art and its Directions is broadly conceived against the backdrop of debates relating to national sovereignty and globalisation. Rather than purely a focus on politically based art in this context, we turn to the question of
directions in art, where directions refer both to geography and chronology. The aim is to investigate artistic production and exchange in relation to the geographical, conceptual and imaginative relationships between north, south, east and west, so as to encompass
discussion of transnational and global art histories; and the binaries of centre and periphery, modern and traditional. The theme takes account of the conference location in Western Australia – ranging from perceptions of the west to its distinct collections, and history.

The research cluster “Translocations” at the Institute for Art History
and Historical Urban Studies at the Technische Universität Berlin is
seeking to hire two postdoctoral researchers for its team. The project
is funded through the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Prize of the DFG,
awarded to Prof. Dr. Bénédicte Savoy in 2016. The research cluster will
study large-scale displacements of cultural assets from antiquity to
the 20th century such as: art theft and spoliation organized by the
state in times of war and occupation, seizure of cultural goods during
colonialism, displacements as a result of a partition of excavation
discoveries or research expeditions, material diaspora of entire
civilizations expedited by the art trade, and confiscations justified
through ideology, nationalization, or en masse disposal of private
property. The key objective of “Translocations” is to compile a
comprehensive selection of historical findings in order to deliver
orientation and direction for dealing with the challenges posed by this
topic now and in the future. For further information on the research

Working field: The candidate will have the opportunity to pursue his or
her own research interests within the context of an interdisciplinary
team and the overall research goals of the project cluster. This
includes the development and execution of both independent and
team-based studies. The candidate will independently produce work for
academic publication and work within the team on the four foundational
projects of the research cluster (a digital atlas, a virtual library, a
glossary, and an image repertory). The candidate will also be involved
in the organization of academic events and the management of the

Requirements: Candidates must have completed a university degree
(Diplom, Master, or equivalent) as well as a completed doctoral degree
(or expectedly completed until 01/09/17), in a discipline related to
the project (art history, history, archeology, area studies,
literature, cultural studies, or ethnology; depending on research
focus, candidates from the legal sciences, sociology, or other related
fields will also be considered); Research interest and academic
experience related to the topic of the project cluster; Historical
knowledge of at least one of the relevant regions and periods; Very
good English and German language skills. Proficiency in at least one
other language relevant to the project is a plus (e.g. Arabic, Chinese,
Greek, Russian, Turkish). Candidates should preferably have experience
and be comfortable working in an interdisciplinary team, and possess
excellent collaboration and communication skills.

University of York MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management

The University of York’s MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management is pleased to announce the numerous scholarship and funding opportunities available for students starting in September 2016.

This MA is the only course in Britain for the study of stained glass conservation and remains the only programme in the English-speaking world.  York has unmatched resources in the Minster and city churches, its leading conservation studios and the Department’s lively Stained Glass Research School. This innovative programme offers an integrated study of stained glass and its conservation. Taught in partnership with the Department of Archaeology, the programme provides training for a variety of employment in stained glass conservation workshops, cultural heritage management, arts administration, administration of historic buildings and museums, and for higher research degrees.

We are happy to announce that The York Glaziers Trust will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2017, and as part of its celebrations will be awarding one MA in Stained Glass student entering in 2016 a £10,000 scholarship for the two year programme (open to UK/EU/Overseas applicants).  There will also be funding available from the Worshipful Company of Glaziers, NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies) and we will be announcing some further scholarships soon.

Stained Glass students are also eligible to apply for the following History of Art scholarships: WRoCAH Research Preparation Masters scholarships and the Ede & Ravenscroft Bridge Scholarship in History of Art (Please note that these scholarships will only apply to Year 1 of the SG MA). Le recenti catastrofi sismiche in Abruzzo e in Emilia hanno ancora una volta mostrato la vulnerabilità del patrimonio monumentale italiano. Nonostante gli interventi istituzionali, il lavoro e l’attività scientifica dei professionisti impegnati sul campo, molteplici sono, a distanza di anni, le questioni irrisolte relative alla ricostruzione di centri storici danneggiati, ma non per questo annientati dal sisma.

L’emergenza da catastrofe è stata più volte affrontata in Italia nell’ultimo secolo. Ma quali sono stati nel passato e quali sono oggi i principi e le linee guida da adottare nella ricostruzione?

Il Workshop del KHI, a conclusione dello Studienkurs dedicato a L’Aquila, allargherà la prospettiva di indagine ad altri centri storici colpiti da catastrofi naturali. Il coinvolgimento di studiosi impegnati in difesa del patrimonio culturale italiano offrirà un’occasione di confronto sui temi legati alla tutela e alla conservazione, e di riflessione sull’impegno civile e sulla responsabilità etica dello storico dell’arte in situazioni di emergenza.
