About the role

The Warburg Institute is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral research fellow associated with its newly established Professorship in the History of Art, Science and Folk Practice, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This is a two-year position, with an emphasis both on developing the candidate’s own research and on collaborating on interdisciplinary projects under way at the Warburg Institute.

The candidate will have completed their PhD by September 30, 2018, and will be establishing a compelling research orientation in one or more of the fields of the History of Science, History of Art, and Cultural or Social Anthropology. In keeping with the forward-looking approach of the current Warburg Institute, the candidate’s work should explore connections among the history of science, the history of art and images, and historical or present cultural practices. S/he will work closely with the new Chair, Professor John Tresch, and will support the Institute’s ambitions to restore, develop and elaborate the theoretical, cultural historical and anthropological implications of the work of Aby Warburg.

This is fixed term post for 2 years.

We are seeking a Curator of Medieval Western Manuscripts to work in the Weston Library, the home of the Bodleian’s Special Collections. You will carry out a full range of curatorial activities and duties, including creating catalogue descriptions of medieval manuscripts, and contributing to the future development of the online catalogue. You will be answering enquiries and supervising the reading rooms; supporting all aspects of teaching and learning with manuscripts and carrying out research on the collections, you will also assist with exhibitions and public engagement activities, participating in acquisitions work, and supporting fundraising initiatives.

You will have an honours degree and a postgraduate degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent academic achievement; experience of cataloguing medieval manuscripts and of electronic cataloguing systems, along with a reading knowledge of Latin and a paleographical skills in the reading of medieval books and charters, and an ability to communicate about medieval manuscripts with a broad range of people is essential, along with a commitment both to the care of the collections and to a high level of service to readers. Relevant curatorial experience and experience of manuscript digitalisation and other relevant projects in the digital humanities is desirable.

This is a permanent, full-time post.

The department is searching for an energetic candidate whose teaching and research interests focus on Islamic Art, Architecture, and Material Cultures in the wider Mediterranean World, the Middle East, and Central and South East Asia, from the medieval period to the 20th century. The Department of Art History at Dartmouth College invites applications for a scholar of early modern art in Italy (c. 1400 – 1700) for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are especially interested in candidates who situate early modern Italy within broader European and global contexts, such as cultural exchanges with the Americas, North Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean, and/or Asia. We seek a scholar-teacher who is committed to innovative research and undergraduate education. In addition to specialized courses, the successful candidate will also participate in our general survey sequence, our foreign study program in Rome, and our advanced seminar in Art Historical Theories and Methods. A PhD in Art History or a related field is required at the point of hire (July 1, 2018).

The Art History Department has eight and one-half tenure line faculty and regularly sponsors post-doctoral fellows. While the number of majors is small, our courses enjoy strong enrollments from a broad constituency of students and we have a strong record of placing students in top PhD programs and related professional fields. Many of our courses are cross-listed with other programs such as Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies, Middle Eastern Studies; Asian Societies, Cultures and Languages; and Comparative Literature. Current Art History faculty members participate in a variety of campus research and pedagogical initiatives such as digital humanities and experiential learning.  We welcome applicants interested in forging research and curricular links with other campus units.
