Call for Papers The University of Birmingham EMREM Postgraduate Forum 8th Annual Symposium Truth, Lies and Deception Deadline 03/03/2018

We invite all postgraduates working on the Middle Ages and Early Modern periods to submit papers for and attend our 8th Annual Symposium at the University of Birmingham on Thursday 17th and Friday 18th May 2018.

This interdisciplinary 2-day event welcomes papers and/or images of research from History, Literature, Archaeology, Art-History and Music.

Possible topics for papers and images might include, but are not limited to:

  • Forgery and fakes
  • Representation of society and classes
  • Disguise/shapeshifting/impersonation
  • Historiographical innacuracy
  • Plots and treason
  • Fealty and treason
  • Ideas of cartography and ethnography
  • Saints and sinners
  • Modern representations of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern world
  • Oaths and fidelity
  • Temptation
  • Authorship and anonymity
  • Family history, heraldry and insignia
  • Identity

Papers should be 20 minutes in length. Please send proposals of approximately, or 1000 words if applying as a panel, to emremforum@googlemail.com by Friday 3rd March 2018.

For the exhibition send a high-resolution image, along with a 200 word summary of what it shows and how it links to your research (if accepted, we will organise the printing). These will be exhibited during the conference as a five-minute presentation, and prizes will be awarded.
