Scholarships and Fellowships: Two PhD Positions: Alchemy in the Making: From ancient Babylonia via Graeco-Roman Egypt into the Byzantine, Syriac and Arabic traditions (1500 BCE -1000 AD), University of Bologna (Deadline 14th May 2018)

Two PhD positions (3 years each) are available at the University of Bologna (Department of Philosophy and Communication studies) within the ERC project (Consolidator Grant): “Alchemy in the Making: From ancient Babylonia via Graeco-Roman Egypt into the Byzantine, Syriac and Arabic traditions (1500 BCE -1000 AD)”, Acronym: AlchemEast.

The AlchemEast project is devoted to the study of alchemical theories and practices as they appeared and developed in distinct, albeit contiguous (both chronologically and geographically) areas: Graeco-Roman Egypt, Byzantium, and the Near East, from Ancient Babylonian Times to the early Islamic Period. Applicants are expected to propose research projects dealing with the ancient alchemical tradition.

Proposals may focus on the analysis of a specific set of primary sources — depending on the historical period on which the applicant prefers to focus on, primary sources may include alchemical writings in Akkadian, Greek, Syriac or Arabic. The proposals may also focus on a wider and cross-cutting analysis of topics connected to important issues pertaining to the ancient alchemical science and its relations with close fields, such as natural philosophy and medicine.

The doctoral research shall result either in editions and translations of ancient alchemical writings or in monographs focused on central issues of the ancient history of alchemy.

The Warburg Institute: The Warburg Institute is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the classical tradition – in the sense of those elements in European thought, art and institutions that have evolved out of the cultures of the ancient world. Its Library and Photographic Collection are designed and arranged to encourage research into the processes by which one culture learns from another and by which different fields of thought and art act on each other. They are particularly concerned with continuities between the ancient Mediterranean civilizations and the cultural and intellectual history of post-classical Europe, especially in the period to c. 1800.

The Institute is offering a long-term Frances A. Yates Fellowship of two or three years tenable from October 2015.

Frances A. Yates Long-Term Fellowship: Dame Frances Yates, who died in 1981, generously bequeathed her residuary estate to found research Fellowships in her name at the Institute. Fellows’ interests may lie in any aspect of cultural and intellectual history but, other things being equal, preference will be given to those whose work is concerned with those areas of the medieval and Renaissance encyclopaedia of knowledge to which Dame Frances herself made such distinguished contributions.

Eligibility: The Fellowship is generally intended for scholars in the early stages of their careers. Candidates may be pre- or postdoctoral but must have completed at least one year’s research on their doctoral dissertation by the time they submit their application for a Fellowship and, if postdoctoral, must normally have been awarded their doctorate within the preceding five years, i.e. after 1 October 2009. If their doctorate was awarded before this date, they should explain the reasons for any interruption in their academic career in a covering letter.

General ConditionsThose employed as Professor, Lecturer or equivalent in a university or learned institution may normally hold an award only if they are taking unpaid leave for the whole of the period. The Fellowship may not be held concurrently with another Fellowship or award.

The Fellow will be expected to participate in the life of the Institute and to put his/her knowledge at the disposal of the Institute by presenting his/her work in a seminar and by advising the Library and Photographic Collection. The Fellow may teach elsewhere during tenure of the Fellowship only with the express permission of the Director. The Fellow will be required to present a brief written report at the conclusion of the appointment. A Fellowship may be terminated if the Appointing Committee is not satisfied that the conditions of the award are being met. All publications containing results of work done with the aid of a Fellowship shall include adequate acknowledgement of the fact.

Value of the Fellowship: The starting salary of the Fellowship is expected to be £ 28,408 p.a. including London Allowance. Payment will be made monthly in arrears and is liable to deductions for tax and National Insurance.

The person appointed will be deemed automatically to be a member of the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme (USS) and will have contributions deducted accordingly. Once full information on the Scheme has been received, he/she may elect in writing to withdraw from the Scheme.

Tenure: The Fellowship is tenable at the Institute. The Fellow will normally be expected to be at the Institute full-time during the academic terms (which does not exclude the use of other libraries and archives) and to live within commutable distance of the Institute.

Selection: Shortlisted candidates only will be contacted in late January to invite them to send samples of their written work. Shortlisted candidates will then be informed whether they will be invited for an interview, which will be held in March 2015.

2. A curriculum vitae giving full details of name, date of birth, address (including e-mail address) and present occupation, school and university education, degrees, teaching and research experience, publications

3. An outline of proposed research (of not more than two pages) and title of your research project

4. The names and addresses of not more than three persons who have agreed to write, without further invitation, to the Acting Director, Dr Raphaële Mouren, in support of the application. These letters of reference should reach the Acting Director by Friday, 28 November 2014. They must be signed by the referee and sent separately by the referee direct to the Acting Director of the Institute. References may be scanned and sent by e-mail to warburg(at)sas.ac.uk or forwarded in hard copy by post. It is the responsibility of candidates to ask their referees to submit references by 28 November 2014.

The Governing Body of Emmanuel College invites applications for three stipendiary Research Fellowships in any subject; all three Fellowships are for a three-year fixed term, and will commence on 1 October, 2015.

Cmglee_Cambridge_Emmanuel_College_Front_CourtApplications will be accepted from any graduate of a university within or outside the United Kingdom. Eligibility is restricted to those for whom the Research Fellowship would be their first substantial paid academic or research appointment (other than as a doctoral student).

These Fellowships are intended for outstanding researchers early in their careers: successful candidates are likely to be in the latter stages of their research leading to a PhD degree, or post-doctoral researchers who have been awarded their PhD degree after 1 October, 2013. Candidates should note that these Fellowships are extremely competitive.

Research Fellowship: Villa I Tatti – The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, Florence (VIT) and the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations of Koç University, Istanbul (RCAC)

i-tattiVilla I Tatti – The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, Florence (VIT) and the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations of Koç University, Istanbul (RCAC) offer a joint, one-year fellowship. Scholars will spend the Fall semester at one center, and the Spring semester at the other. Here they will carry out projects that represent advanced research in any aspect of the interaction between Italy and the Byzantine or the Ottoman Empire (ca. 1300 to ca. 1700). Subjects covered include art, architecture, archaeology, history, literature, material culture, music, philosophy, religion, and science.

The “I Tatti – RCAC Joint Fellowship” will be awarded at one of two levels: one junior fellowship, for advanced doctoral candidates who are writing their PhD dissertation; or one senior fellowship, for candidates who have received a PhD within a decade of the year of application. (For senior fellowships, PhD certificates must bear a date between January 1, 2003 and December 31, 2012, inclusive.) Candidates must be conversant in English and have at least a reading knowledge of Italian. They must have a solid background in Italian Renaissance and Byzantine or Ottoman Studies. Fellows may not take on any other obligations such as teaching positions, even part-time ones, during any part of their Fellowship term. Each successful candidate must be approved by both RCAC and VIT. Priority will be given to applicants with no previous association with VIT or RCAC. Renewals, repeats, or deferments of this Fellowship are not granted.

The Fellowship period will be one academic year, which will be spent as one term at VIT and one term at RCAC. The dates of the Fall and Spring semesters differ at the two institutions (see below), and successful candidates can express a preference for spending the Fall semester in Florence or Istanbul. During both semesters, it must be possible for Fellows to carry out most of their research with the resources available in the city where they are resident.

Details relating to I Tatti:
– The dates of the Fall semester are July 1 – December 31 (Fellows required to begin work by September 1), and the dates of the Spring semester are February 1 – June 30.
– Fellows are expected to spend at least three days a week at the Villa and are required to live in Florence or the surrounding area, but are welcome to take occasional research trips to other cities.
– Fellows are offered a reserved carrel in the Biblioteca Berenson, or, when available, a study, lunch on weekdays (not extended to spouses), and various other privileges.
– The stipend is USD 4,000 per month for senior Fellows, and USD 3000 for junior Fellows, plus a one-time supplement (maximum, USD 1,500) towards relocation expenses. When possible, a one-bedroom apartment will be set aside for the Fellow’s use, rent free, but with charges for utilities. If an apartment is not available, USD 1000 per month will be offered to help offset rental costs.
– The Fellow is responsible for obtaining a visa, permesso di soggiorno, and health coverage (and, if appropriate, for accompanying family members). The Fellow must determine if a visa is required and, if necessary, obtain one before travel.
– Scholars awarded this Fellowship can apply for other I Tatti fellowships only after a year has passed from the end of their sojourn.

Details relating to the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations:
– The dates of the Fall semester are September 15 – January 31, and the dates of the Spring semester are February 1 – June 15.
– Fellows are offered accommodation at the RCAC, with single rooms for fellows unless accompanied by spouse/partner for the period of the fellowship, in which case one of a limited number of larger two or three room suites will be assigned to the grantee; however children are not allowed to reside at the RCAC.
– Fellows are offered a carrel in the study room, use of the RCAC and NIT Libraries, dinner 5 nights a week (Sunday – Thursday, accompanying spouse/partner may also join) except on university and national holidays.
– The RCAC fellowship committee is composed of 4 KU faculty members from the Departments of History and of Archaeology and Art History.
– Both categories of fellowship carry with them the cost of one round-trip ticket to Turkey and up to 1000 USD for travel of spouse accompanying the fellow during the period of his or her research.
– Monthly stipend for the junior fellowship is the Turkish lira equivalent of USD 800 net per month with the Turkish lira equivalent of a USD 400 research budget. The senior fellowship carries with it a stipend of the Turkish lira equivalent of USD 1100 – 1500 net per month (the exact amount of the stipend will be decided by the Admissions Committee) with the Turkish lira equivalent of a USD 400 research budget.
– The fellow will be a full part of the RCAC’s community of fellows, and be able to take part in its active program of study trips, symposia and conferences.
– A health insurance package will be offered; if the health insurance package offered by the RCAC is not acceptable to the fellow selected, then he or she will be granted a lump sum equivalent to the cost of the insurance package, to be applied to the continuation of his or her own preexistent program(s).
– KU will secure a Turkish residence permit allowing the fellow to reside legally at the RCAC. However, securing any additional research permits for work in museums, libraries, archives, and/or archeological sites in Turkey is the responsibility of the fellow.
