Publication: “The Idea of the Gothic Cathedral. Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Meanings of the Medieval Edifice in the Modern Period” By Stephanie a. Glaser (ed.)

RITUS_9The essays in this book focus on various social, political, cultural, and aesthetic meanings ascribed to Gothic cathedrals in Europe in the post-medieval period.

Central to many medieval ritual traditions both sacred and secular, the Gothic cathedral holds a privileged place within the European cultural imagination and experience. Due to the burgeoning historical interest in the medieval past, in connection with the medieval revival in literature, visual arts, and architecture that began in the late seventeenth century and culminated in the nineteenth, the Gothic cathedral took centre stage in numerous ideological discourses. These discourses imposed contemporary political and aesthetic connotations upon the cathedral that were often far removed from its original meaning and ritual use.

This volume presents interdisciplinary perspectives on the resignification of the Gothic cathedral in the post-medieval period. Its contributors, literary scholars and historians of art and architecture, investigate the dynamics of national and cultural movements that turned Gothic cathedrals into symbols of the modern nation-state, highlight the political uses of the edifice in literature and the arts, and underscore the importance of subjectivity in literary and visual representations of Gothic architecture. Contributing to scholarship in historiography, cultural history, intermedial and interdisciplinary studies, as well as traditional disciplines, the volume resonates with wider perspectives, especially relating to the reuse of artefacts to serve particular ideological ends.

The International Doctoral Program (IDP) MIMESIS is dedicated to innovative doctoral research in the fields of literature and the arts, with special emphasis on historical, theoretical and transdisciplinary perspectives. It will enable cooperation between research projects in literature, theatre, performance, music, film studies, architecture and the visual arts, offering both a forum and a framework in which interests drawn from any one of these areas enter into a dialogue with other areas in the wider spectrum of creative engagements. Its research program is framed by the term mimesis, a key concept throughout the history of the arts, right up to the most recent developments in critical and cultural theory. MIMESIS offers a structured program of doctoral study combining seminars, workshops, lecture series and master classes. In addition internships with leading cultural institutions and at partner universities will be integrated into the study program.
How to Apply: The applicants should hold an excellent/above average master’s degree or equivalent in literature, art history, theatre or film studies or related subjects. The outline of the research project should show an explicit connection to the research profile of the program (i.e. mimesis).

Musea Brugge Research School November 19-21, 2016 & February 25–27, 2017

Madonna 1475The Flemish research centre for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands is organising the second edition of its museum research school in 2016-2017. The innovative formula of this Musea Brugge Research School allows motivated art history students to study 15th and 16th century art works from the Bruges museum collections in depth, as part of a select group of other students, docents, and curators from various national and international universities and institutions.  The research school targets art history students at the BA or MA level who have a strong interest in Netherlandish art and who intend to embark on a career in the field. The research school provides participants with the opportunity to delve into selected works of art from the collections for three consecutive days and introduces various research methodologies that help in understanding and interpreting art and its context. The research school presents workshops and lectures on historiography, methodology, technical art history, and archival research, as well as possibilities for extensive study and ample discussions in the museum during closing hours.

The research school will take place in Bruges on November 19 – 21, 2016 and February 25 – 27, 2017 and consists of two three-days sessions. The first will offer the participants an occasion to study the objects of the collections in depth and to discuss various relevant aspects of 15th and 16th century Flemish art. During the second session in February contributions of the participants, based on the results of the first session, will be presented and discussed among the docents and participants.  Participation to the Musea Brugge Research School is free but students must take care of their travel and lodging expenses.

Three lunches and two dinners are included. There are 15 places available. Studentsfrom all universities are eligible to apply. Students must be able to follow and hold a discussion in English.
